How this mulch estimator works
For a rectangle, the calculator multiplies length by width. For a circle, it uses π × (diameter ÷ 2)². It converts the entered depth to feet, then reports the result in cubic feet and cubic yards. Bag estimates divide cubic feet by 2 or 3 and round up because bags are sold whole.
Depth reference
As a practical reference, previously mulched areas are often topped up at 2–3 inches and new mulched areas at 3–4 inches. These are reference ranges, not rules; choose the depth appropriate for your project.
FAQ
How much mulch do I need?
Enter the bed shape, measurements, and intended depth. This mulch calculator shows bulk volume and two common bag-size estimates in one place.
Is this a mulch coverage calculator?
Yes. It estimates the volume needed to cover one rectangular or circular area at the depth you enter.
